EXHIBITION SYNOPSIS

前言

潘登在他幼儿时,还没上小学之前,就表现出了在绘画上的天赋与热爱。父亲是个警察,母亲是个工人,家里的人从事的事都和艺术无关,但父母对潘登在绘画上产生的浓厚兴趣给予了很大的鼓励,常买些绘画书籍供他学习,因此绘画这颗种子在他幼小的心灵里安了家,以至于以后一发不可收拾。

人的一生没有谁是一帆风顺的,潘登也是如此。完成学业后,由于找不到理想的工作,他为了生存下过海,后在动画公司任职,任职期间,生存与艺术理想之间的问题一直是潘登内心无法回避并始终困扰的事情,到底是顶着生存的压力去追求艺术理想,还是为了生存暂时放弃理想的追求?他常常半夜醒来被这种斗争折磨。最终潘登还是找到了答案,认为人的一生是非常短暂的,既然如此短暂,为什么还不勇敢地去做自己想做和热爱的事业呢?他放弃了动画公司优厚的待遇,开始了他的职业艺术生涯。经过多年的探索和不懈地努力,潘登的艺术不仅形成了独树一帜的个人艺术风格,同时他的作品也受到了国内外私人藏家和机构的青睐,并跻身中国油画名家的行列。2008年他受聘于北京沈氏兄弟文化传媒有限公司,担任艺术总监一职。本次展览的作品呈现了潘登各个时期的艺术创作成果。纵观历史,每一位有追求的人想取得较好的成就,这背后都要付出极大的勇气和超越常人的艰辛劳作。

潘登艺术具有强烈的表现主义风格,他的作品有呼吸,有感情,有精神,也有批判性,他的绘画去掉了事物表层的修饰,让观者直视事物的内在本质和精神想象。他的作品涉及面较为多元,有对政治的调侃,也有对中国在经历了文化大革命的洗劫后,整个国民对信仰和价值观的缺失形成的及时行乐和被金钱控制下,精神堕落的批判,同时,他的作品不乏对动物题材的表达,呼吁人们对动物关爱和关注,并揭示动物和人是一样的,有精神,有感情,也有爱的存在。

潘登作品大气磅礴,一气呵成,具有强烈的绘画语言性的同时,不乏东方文化的抒情特质,是中西文化完美的结合,同时,也是潘登艺术风格重要的、耀眼的亮点所在。

Preface

Pan Deng showed his talent and love for drawing in his childhood before attending the primary school. His father is a policeman and his mother is a worker. None of his family members carries on a job related to arts, but the parents gave much encouragement to him due to his ken interests in drawing, and often bought drawing books for him to study. As a result, the seed of drawing settled down in his little heart and later he developed keen interests in it.

Nobody can lead a life full of success, no exception to Pan Deng. After graduation, since unable to find an ideal job, he did some business for a living and then worked in an animation company. During his work, the problem about a choice between living and artistic ideal had been an inevitable and disturbing problem in his heart. He always wondered: “should I pursue my artistic ideal by leading a stressful life or give up the pursuit of my ideal temporarily for existence?” He often woke up at midnights and was tortured by this struggle. Finally, he found the answer, thinking that life was very transient, and since so short, why didn’t he do the career he wanted to do and loved bravely? He gave up the high wage paid by the animation company and started his professional artistic career. After years of explorations and unremitting efforts, not only has he developed a unique artistic style, but meanwhile, his works have become popular with private collectors and organizations at home and abroad. In addition, he has won the title of famous Chinese oil painter. In 2008, he was employed at Beijing Shen Bros. Culture Media Limited and held the POSTERS OF art director. The works exhibited this time present the achievements of his artistic creations in different periods. Throughout history, every aspiring person has to show great courage and make supernormal efforts before getting good grades.

Pan Deng’s art has a strong expressionist style. His works are breathing, sentient and critical. His paintings, unadorned by the surface of things, enable viewers to directly see the internal essence and spiritual vision of things. His creative theme is diversified. Some works ridicule the politics, and some criticize the whole national’s carpe diem and mental degradation formed from the lack of faith and values as well as the popularity of the attitudes towards money. In addition, some of his works are also themed on animals, calling on people to concern and love animals, and revealing that as human does, animals also have spirit, emotion and love.

Pan Deng’s works, created at one stretch, are grand and magnificent, featured not only by strong painting language but also by oriental culture’s lyricism. As a perfect combination of Chinese and Western culture, the works also highlight his artistic style.

专访中国著名当代艺术家潘登

作为一位活跃在中国当代艺术圈,有影响力的艺术家,潘登先生的架上作品无疑会给观者带来视觉上的刺激和精神上的震撼,他以艺术家的真诚、激情和诗般的心绪,精华的艺术呈现,通过黑白灰高雅的色调和极具张力的绘画语言表达,在对现实进行批判的同时,提出了对人的价值与存在的疑问,以及人类与动物之间关系问题的思考。

2014年11月22日潘登先生的架上作品展《非现实的真实》将在美国圣何塞隆重举办,这不仅是一场视觉盛宴,同时会给观者带来精神层面上的思考和追问:我们来到这个世界,我们来干什么?我们将到哪里去?……

穿越“三次元”的真实世界

当今社会,文化面临着经济的重压,商业的入侵使得人的精神世界面临危机,人的价值观失重,人的精神失衡,人的尊严受到挑战。“三次元”不可能出现的真实世界在当代艺术家潘登的思维中和笔下变得如此真实。

从潘登的作品中,我们不难感到他对艺术的真诚与严肃性。他的作品透过对事物精神本质的揭示,构建了震撼心灵的艺术感受,引起观者一连串对人类自身的反省。生命中崇高的理想离不开灵魂的期望和冲击,各类事物形态在经过艺术家内心的感受和图片中的转换后,形成解释现实与想象的形式和内涵。潘登的艺术经验、生活经验与精神状态在画面与形式上的实现,是不可互换个体的精神表征,他的创作赋予了事物全新的价值,让观者在近距离的审视中,感受到一种笔触畅流活跃、颜色堆砌质感的愉快,而在一定距离之外,那种微妙的画面效果又重新赋予画面一种更博大、坚实的意境之美。

对话潘登——

“这些图像不是真实意义上的写实和再现,在这些图像中充满了艺术家的个人思想和情感,以及绘画语言的创造与想象,他是艺术家生存感受的具体呈现,更多的是艺术家主观努力想达到的结果。”

问:从您的作品中不难看出是属于表现类艺术风格。

潘登:是的,准确的来说是属于具象表现。

问:您能谈一谈您所理解的具象表现吗?我想这样可以更好的帮助观众解读您的作品。

潘登:好的。你看这些画面,看上去图像都非常真实,没有经过任何扭曲和变形,但是这些图像不是真实意义上的写实和再现,在这些图像中充满了艺术家的个人思想和情感,以及绘画语言的创造与想象,他是艺术家对生存感受的具体的呈现,更多的是艺术家主观努力想达到的结果。这就是我理解的具象表现。

问:能简单介绍一下您的作品吗?

潘登:好的。我的作品涉及面较广,有对政治的调侃,也有对当下人类信仰的缺失、精神堕落的批判,更多的是对动物和人类的生活环境的担忧和关注,这是我对我作品的简单描述,同时希望观众能从我的作品中得到更加高深的自己的见解,这是我所希望的。

问:绘画是您一生的理想和追求吗?

潘登:是的,毋庸置疑。

问:如果说有更好的赚钱的机会,你会改变吗?

潘登:不会,除了家人和朋友外,艺术是我全部的生活意义。

问:您来自中国,能谈一谈对美国的感受吗?

潘登:自由清新的空气,自然质朴的环境,非常适合人类生存和居住,最重要的是作为一个艺术家,在这里亲眼目睹了世界各地的艺术大师的真迹,这个在中国是不可能实现的,这是对于任何一个艺术家来说最宝贵的感受。

As an influential artist who is active in the Chinese contemporary art cycle, Mr. Deng PAN’s easel works will no doubt bring visual stimulations and spiritual shocks to the viewers, by using artist's sincere, passionate and poetic mood and the essence of art presentation, he proposed the doubt of human values and existence and the thought of the issue about the relationship between humans and animals while criticizing the reality through black, white and gray elegant tones and in the painting language expression with great tension.

Mr. Deng PAN’s easel exhibition "The Unrealistic Truth" will be held in the San Jose on November 22, 2014. This is not only a visual feast, but will bring thinking and questioning to audience at spirit level: we come to this world, what will we do? Where will we go? ...

Through the "three-dimensional" real world

In today's society, culture is facing economic stress, commercial intrusion makes the spiritual world face a crisis, people's value is weightless, the people’s spirit is imbalance, and people’s dignity is challenged. Real world that cannot appear in "Three-dimensional" becomes so real in the thought and pen of the contemporary artist Deng PAN.

From Deng PAN's works, we can easily feel his artistic sincerity and seriousness. Through revealing the spiritual nature of things, his works construct traumatic art experience, caused the viewers’ a series of introspections on human themselves. Lofty ideals in life are inseparable from the soul's expectations and the impact, all kinds of thing shapes forms the form and content of explaining reality and imagination after converted by artist inner feelings and pictures. The realization of Deng PAN’s artistic experience, life experience and mental state at the screen and form is the spirit characterizations of interchangeable individuals, his creation makes new value of things wealthy, makes viewers feel a pleasure of brushwork smooth activity and color piled texture in close look, but from a certain distance, the kind of subtle picture effect again gives the picture a more broad, solid artistic conception beauty.

"These images are not realism and reproduce in real sense, these images are full of the artist's personal thoughts and feelings, as well as creativity and imagination of painting language, they are specific presentations of artist’s living experience, and the more are the results that the artist trying to achieve by subjective efforts."

Q: From your work is not difficult to see that it belongs to performance class artistic style.

Deng PAN: Yes, to say accurately it belongs to figurative performance.

Q: Can you talk about your understanding of figurative performance? I think this could help the audience better understand your work.

Deng PAN: Yes. You see these images, the images look very real, without any distortion and deformation, but these images are not realistic and reproduce in real sense, these images are full of the artist's personal thoughts and feelings, as well as the creation and imagination of painting language, they are specific presentations of artist’s living experience, and the more are the results that the artist trying to achieve by subjective efforts. This is my understanding of figurative representation.

Q: Can you briefly explain your work?

Deng PAN: Yes. My work involves a broader theme, there are ridicules against political, there are also criticisms against the current human’s lack of faith and fallen spirit, more are worries and concerns about animal and human living environment, this is my brief description for my work, and hope the audience can get a more profound own opinion from my work, this is what I want.

Q: Is painting your lifetime ideal and the pursuit?

Deng PAN: Yes, without a doubt.

Q: If there is a better opportunity to make money, you will change?

Deng PAN: No, in addition to family and friends, the art is all my life meaning.

Q: You come from China, can you talk about the feelings of the United States?

Deng PAN: Freedom and fresh air, natural and pristine environment, is suitable for human to survive and live, most important, as an artist, I witnessed the artists’ authentic work from around the world here, this is impossible to achieve in China, this is a most valuable experience for any artist.

一位来自大洋彼岸的艺术家

中国著名当代艺术家,一级美术师,杨建侯基金会会长,纽约哈德逊艺术家协会会员潘登本月24日刚刚结束了在圣何塞成功举办的个人架上作品展“非现实的真实”。

艺术家的心路历程和作品解析登于1964年出生在中国南京的一个普通干部家庭。幼年时他就显示出了对绘画的浓厚兴趣,这也许就是天性使然。那时他见什么就画什么,画什么就像什么,正值文革动乱时期,他画的最多的是红光满面的毛泽东像和工农兵。1976年毛泽东去世,标志着文革和其独裁统治的结束,中国人处在一种无比悲痛、惊恐和担忧之中,不知中国该何去何从,个人的命运又将如何,这些政治以及斗争对于幼年的潘登来说是一种朦胧且深刻的记忆。

文革结束后,集体在痛苦中觉醒,西方现代艺术思潮也不断进入中国,给中国僵化单凋的艺术注入了新鲜血液。当时的中国产生了无数的思潮,无数的学术和流派,并逐渐形成了一种新的艺术潮流,作为年轻的艺术家,潘登很快成为这股新兴艺术潮流中的一员,他几乎参加了南京所有的大小展览和活动。最让他记忆犹新的是1986年“晒太阳”运动,那时,同学郭海平找到他和另外几位同学一起策划、酝酿这个活动,经过艰苦的努力,冲破重重困难,最终决定将这个活动定在南京玄武湖露天公园内举办。“晒太阳”运动的理念来源于当时有许许多多青年艺术家创作了大批优秀的现代艺术作品和表现主义作品,却没有一个人有机会得到展示,与其让这些作品放在家里发霉(那个时代艺术家没有工作室,基本是在家里进行创作),还不如拿出来晒晒太阳。消息一经发出,受到全国各地艺术家的纷纷支持和响应,一时间全国各地的前卫艺术作品一起汇集到南京玄武湖公园的长廊和草地上,作品有纸上的、架上的,还有装置。这些作品朴实而真切,流露出艺术家对个性、自由的渴望和对被压抑的人性的抗争,场面壮观而热烈,放映了那个时代年轻艺术家的心声和对传统艺术叛逆的强烈愿望,这是1986年艺术界的一件大事。

随着中国改革开放的不断扩大和不断深入,中国由计划经济时代进入到了市场经济时代,打破了大锅饭的概念,从而又一次让中国人感到了不安和恐惧,不解和被政府抛弃的感觉,潘登敏锐地抓住了当下人们的心态,创作了壮志作品《晕》。当时,这件作品在南京市美术馆展出受到极高的评价,作品最好的诠释了中国人集体无意识状态下的心理,国人在斗争和运动中已经完成丧失自我、判断和个人生存能力。

潘登创作的最早一批黑白油画作品,是在改革开放后倒闭大工厂的大仓库里完成的,让人感受最为深刻的是毛泽东画像,这批毛泽东画像再也不是他儿时所画的神采奕奕、红光满面的毛泽东,而是一个行将就木、面如枯槁、奄奄一息、垂死的老人,这是对毛泽东的神话和权威有形的批判,这个神是政治和无知人群所造就的,一旦人群觉醒,必将被人从内心推翻。潘登最受争议和瞩目的一张作品《亲切会晤》,在画面中毛泽东垂垂老矣,面如死去的树皮,右手抓着美国著名的性感明星玛丽莲▪梦露的手,正低头亲吻着她的手,玛丽莲▪梦露的表情挑逗,身着性感,她左手夹着香烟,形态十分放荡。这件作品在当时被各大门户网站放头条刊登,受到众多人的关注和议论,但不久遭到官方的封杀。笔者认为,潘登的这张《亲切会晤》表明了艺术家明确的观念,即毛泽东的影响在中国己全面消退,中国正在进入经济、物质、消费和欲望的时代。

中国的文化大革命打破和批判了一切传统道德观念和文化思想,但却没有建立新的道德和文化信仰,旧的已遭唾弃,新的没有建立,以至于在经济高速发展的今天,人们内心又一次迷失,因为大家的精神层面一片空白,丧失了一切免疫能力,只能在经济巨大的漩涡中不能自拔,并随着漩涡的惯性苟且着。潘登的作品《只羡鸳鸯不羡仙》是对当下人们生存状态最好的表达,画面中有一只豹子,正带着一种惊异的表情,关注着一对恋人,在海上悠闲自得的做爱,海的另一边有一只向他们急速行驶来的船,这对年轻人浑然不觉到危险,也许并不是浑然不觉,只是他们不想放弃眼前的快乐而已。在中国经济高速发展的今天,金钱在引诱着人们,人们在追逐着利益,此起彼伏,人们在经济大潮中完全迷失了自我、前途和未来,把金钱、利益和享乐做为个人的追求,精神在沉沦,道德底线也在政府进入全面的腐败中开始整体坍塌。没有信仰的时代是可怕的时代,中国和中国人将何去何从?人们的精神如何才能得到救赎?人性的光辉何时才能重新占据人们的心灵?这一切都在鞭策和拷问着每一位有良知的艺术家们。

An artist from across the Atlantic

Deng PAN

Chinese famous contemporary artist, top grade artist of China, chairman of the Yang Jianhou Foundation, a member of the Arts Mid Hudson Artists Association, Deng PAN just ended personal shelf exhibition "The Unrealistic Truth" which was successfully held in San Jose on the 24th of this month.

Artist's journey of his heart and work analysis

Deng PAN was born in an ordinary cadre family in Nanjing, China, in 1964. He showed a keen interest in the painting in his childhood, which is perhaps the instinct. At that time, he drew what he saw, painted what was like what, it right was the Great Proletarian Culture Revolution period, what he painted most was ruddy Zedong MAO portraits and worker and peasant soldiers. Zedong MAO died in 1976, marking the end of the Great Proletarian Culture Revolution and his dictatorship, the Chinese people were very sad, panic and fearful, did not know where china would go, and how was the fate of the individual, these politics as well as the struggles were hazy and deep memories for childhood Deng PAN.



After the Great Proletarian Culture Revolution, the collective awakened in pain, modern Western art concepts also continued to enter China, injected fresh blood into the Chinese rigid and monotonous art. Countless thoughts, countless academics and genres produced at that time in China, countless, and gradually formed a new artistic trend, as a young artist, Deng PAN soon became one member of the new artistic trend, he almost attended all sizes of exhibitions and activities in Nanjing. What remained most refresh in his memory was the "basking" campaign in 1986, at that time, Haiping GUO found him together with other several classmates and planed and brewed this activity, through hard work and breaking numerous difficulties, finally decided to hold this event in open park of Xuanwu Lake in Nanjing. The philosophy of "basking" campaign appeared because many young artists created a large number of outstanding modern art works and expressionist works at that time, but no one had a chance to show, rather than let these works mildew at home (artist had no studio at that time, creation is basically at home), might as well take out to bask them. Once the message was issued, it received the artists’ support and response all over the country, at same time, avant-garde art works all around the country gathered together on the promenade and grass of Xuanwu Lake Park in Nanjing, there were works in papers and on shelves, as well as devices. These works were simple and real, revealed the artists’ desire for individuality and freedom and struggle against repressive human nature, the scene was spectacular and warm, reflected the aspirations of the young artists at that time, and a strong desire to rebel against traditional art, which was an event of art community in1986.

With continuous expanding and deepening of China's reform and opening up, China entered from a planned economy era into a market economy era, broke the concept of the big pot, so once again let the Chinese people feel anxious, panic, confused and feel abandoned by the government, Deng PAN keenly seized the current mentality of the people, created a aspiration work "Dizzy". At the time, this work received high evaluation when exhibited in Nanjing Art Museum, the work best interpreted Chinese collective mental under unconscious state, and the Chinese people had completely lost themselves, judgment and personal survival ability in the struggle and the movement.
