EXHIBITION SYNOPSIS

Pan Deng's Animal Farm Description

The Foundry is pleased to announce Animal Farm, Pan Deng’s premier solo exhibition. Pan Deng expresses his mood and weaves his style through a black and white medium that he feels illuminates the soul of his subjects. He seeks to isolate subjects that have deep meaning to him: dogs (he grew up with two of them and loved them dearly), flies (they are constantly around us) and political figures (they control our world). By focusing on a single subject, be it fly or man, Pan Deng attempts to uncover the soul residing within. He paints with a passion to express the soul of each character in his piece; to have the viewer find the meaning is his purpose.

Born one of three brothers to a family of police officers in Nanjing, during the start of the Cultural Revolution, art was never cultivated within his family. Painting was a path Pan Deng had to pursue on his own. At an early age he found that he possessed a skill for painting that made him stand out among his peers. From his initial artistic realization, Pan Deng has never thought twice about the pursuit he embraces as life. As an artist, Pan Deng has found it hard to support himself through painting alone, so he has worked as an illustrator of children’s books for the past ten years to support his family. Through hard work and study alongside his contemporaries, Pan Deng has refined his style while pursuing his distinct philosophical search.

The emotion of his paintings are in the simplicity of the works, sole animals or a man taking a photo, but the depth of the picture lies within the amount of energy and feeling each work radiates. He constantly revisits the piece; never quite finishing it until he feels that the entire meaning has been projected through this one canvas.

The Animal Farm opening takes place on Wednesday, July 25th from 7-9pm. The Animal Farm exhibition runs from July 25th through August 25th.
